Full Moon Rising
Photo: Stefan Seip
The full moon seems to perch amid the trees in a picture taken near Stuttgart, Germany, in March and released last week. The moon looks larger on the horizon than when it’s overhead because of an optical effect called the Ponzo Illusion: The human brain perceives the sky as a dome, so we subconsciously think the moon is farther away—and thus larger—when it’s on the horizon than when it’s above us.

Cheryl Dunye is a director, screenwriter, and filmmaker whose work explores issues of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation. Her work is characteristically postmodern in the self-referential disclosing of Dunye’s role as both actor and director. Combining intensely personal accounts with humor, Dunye’s films and videos are engaging and provocative, revealing the complexities and struggles she has faced, as well as her happiness and pride, in being an African-American lesbian. Dunye wrote, directed and starred in her first film which was the first African American lesbian feature film, The Watermelon Woman.
Dunye serves on the Directors Guild of America’s Independent Council and on the advisory board for New York’s Independent Film Project’s Gordon Parks Award. She was also a mentor for IFP/ West Project Involve and a board member of Los Angeles OUTFEST

I have been in love with Cheryl Dunye since I was 16… Sigh….
Jacket: Cavin Klein
T-shirt: Crooks & Castles
Gray Linen Scarf: Street Vendor in L.A
Leggings: Old Navy
Shoes: Jimmy Choo for H&M
Earrings: I don’t remember. sorry.
Oh my God this outfit is 100% amazing! I am in love with the jacket.
This is one out of the three portraits I made for my Transfiguration of Iconic Images: Intergenerational Mujeres in Mexican & U.S. Icons project (a final for Ethnic Studies: Ethnic Art course).
This one is a self portrait and I chose to transfigure Loteria card: La Sirena. To me the image of la Sirena represents this notion of a hybrid (she is part woman, part fish), being mixed or mestiza, and represents living in two worlds. But beyond that, she demonstrates a balance between two identities and cultures, something that I have been doing (though challenging) for some time now, with being X/Chicana, being born in the U.S. with parents from Mexico, and genderqueer.
But yes, this is me: short hair, glasses, small boobs, wide hips, and with multiple identities and cultures… i love myself this way.
I will always reblog anything from this photoshoot with Paula Patton. She is totally my dream girl.
